This interesting construction is formed by carefully fitting multiple pieces (quite literally hundreds) of decorative timbers around a precise oval base (as illustrated in the detail photo on this page). Each of these painstakingly fitted blocks are not veneers, but solid pieces of Oak and Ash carefully scribed together and mounted together to form these highly decorative sides.
The marquetry of the top, features two perfect flowers formed in Plum Wood, on a rich base of Elder and surrounded by an oak outline band.
There were only 2 boxes made in this design pattern, which not only required tremendous amounts of patience and skill to form the decorative lid, but also to realise the attractive but technically challenging construction for the box sides.
This particular variation (single lift out trays), is priced at £450. My father's preference to find ever more challenging constructions and designs suggest that this piece will remain only one of two and therefore retains its unique qualities into our future generations!
