Lydney Harbour

on the banks of the Severn

The harbour is nearing the end of its refurbishment with new lock gates, footpaths (also suitable for wheelchairs) and pedestrian crossings over the gates.

The old and the new sit comfortably alongside - rusty old winches adjacent to gleaming machinery to open the new lock gates and, along the banks of the Severn, the rusting old rails can be seen at low tide.

Views stretch across the Severn towards the Berkeley Power Station opposite while to the west are the two Severn Bridges and Oldbury Power Station on the southern banks of the river.

The intriguing stones - and the subject of much local controversy until their novel role was spotted....

The stones on the banks provide compass bearings and views towards local landmarks - as spotted by these cyclists

.... if you align yourself correctly with these stones, you will see which direction you are facing (above - south!)
